2011 State Legislature – Outlook for Sustainability

In this economic downturn, with a House divided and a new Governor, what are the prospects for 2011 legislation related to sustainability?  Two highly respected legislators share their views as they depart for Salem to wrestle in earnest with the myriad issues facing a state that finds itself, in the words of Governor Kitzhaber, in a “death spiral.”  In particular, Dingfelder and Garrett will report on prospects for initiatives to promote sustainability and those that might reverse existing laws that promote sustainability.

Speakers:  Senator Jackie Dingfelder and Representative Chris Garrett

Senator Jackie Dingfelder, in her tenth year in the legislature, will serve again as the Chair of the Senate Environment and Natural Resource Committee.  Widely recognized as an effective champion for environmental legislation, Dingfelder holds a Master’s Degree in Regional Planning and has a private consulting practice as an environmental planner.

Representative Chris Garrett, a lawyer at Perkins Coie, first ran for the legislature in 2008 to fill the seat vacated by Greg Macpherson.  A graduate of Chicago Law School, Garrett was a “close second” for 2009 session Rookie of the Year in the view of Willamette Week and was selected as Assistant Majority Leader by his Democratic colleagues.
